AGE 1 VISIT
New parents often ask “When should my child first see a dentist?”
The answer is, by your child’s first birthday. We know this is surprising for some parents. However, studies have shown that preschool-aged children are getting more cavities. In fact more than 1 in 4 children in the US has had a least one cavity by the age of 4. Many kids get cavities as early as 2.
The purpose of the age 1 dental visit is to learn about your child’s oral health and how to best care for your child’s unique needs. By scheduling an appointment with us by your child’s first birthday (or within 6 months of his or her first tooth), Dr. Maturin can help you learn proper oral hygiene techniques, manage your child’s diet and prevent oral problems.
At your child’s Age One visit, you will learn:
- How to care for your child’s mouth
- Proper use of fluoride, if recommended
- Oral habits
- Ways to prevent accidents that could damage teeth
- Teething & milestones of development
- The link between diet and oral health
The age 1 dental visit is similar to your well-baby check up at the pediatrician’s office.
During this visit, you can expect Dr. Maturin to:
- Review your child’s history
- Respond to any questions or concerns you have
- Talk with you about your child’s oral health
- Thoroughly examine your child’s teeth with your child in your lap
- Show you how to clean your child’s teeth
- Give specific advice about home care
- Tell you what to expect as your child grows & develops
- Suggest a schedule for follow-up care
